Vote "NO" on Proposition 129

From: Riverview Animal Hospital

Durango, CO

We are writing to express our concerns with Colorado Proposition 129, which proposes the creation of Veterinary Professional Associates (VPAs) with minimal training.

Quick version: Vote NO

More info: As local veterinarians, we are deeply concerned about the risks this poses to pet health and safety. This measure would allow individuals with only two years of mostly online training to treat illnesses and perform surgery on pets. These graduates will have only one semester of hands-on clinical training and tissue handling. This is highly inadequate and very dangerous for our pet population.

It is important to note that PetSmart and other big-box corporate special interest groups have pushed this initiative forward, misleadingly presenting it as a grassroots effort.

Instead of creating a new role, Colorado veterinarians have urged the legislature to expand the capacity of our Certified Veterinary Technicians (CVTs). Recent laws have been enacted that allow us to broaden the scope of practice for CVTs, who already have significantly more hands-on clinical training than VPAs would receive. By legally empowering CVTs, who are already integral members of our practices, we can enhance veterinary care without compromising safety.

We are in agreement with our other local veterinary clinics, and strongly encourage the community to vote no on Proposition 129 for the safety of our animals.

Signed,

Dr. Shannon, Dr. Randy, Dr. Jessica, Dr. Karen, Dr. Melissa, Dr. Amy, Dr. Natasha, Dr. Emmy, Dr. Shawn, Dr. Hailey, Dr. Deanna, and Dr. Kathleen
